Unit 62 - LO3 - 3D Character Model

Step 1 - Getting a high resolution face scan.

The first step was to get a generated model of the head to go over in Maya. This was done with a phone app that scans the head of someone and generated a high res 3D model and texture map with UV instructions which can be put into Maya. This model is very accurate however the high amount of polygons and high quality of the texture means the model will need to be manually optimised.

Step 2 - Going over the scanned head model.

Next the model needed to be optimised for the 3D enviroment. I did this by using the quad draw tool while the generated model was being used as a live surface for me to draw over and create new quadgons over the top of the original model. Tri-gons were used as little as possible and the model ended with a low poly model which is fit to be used in the enviroment.

Step 3 - UV texturing the model

Next I added the original texture map from the original model and mapped the new optimised model to it. This proved to be difficult as the map is very complex with multiple sections separated.

Step 4 - Creating a low quality texture map for the character.

I used a downloaded and pre - textured model for this part. I had taken a picture of my face, and cut it out to be placed on top of the texture maps face. I then used the pen tool in illustrator to make a low quality version which can be placed on the new body.

Step 5 - Finishing the character

The face model when completed can be attached to the body when the old head is removed and connected using the bridge tool. Then the texture can be placed on the model and the UV for the head would then need to be edited so the texture fits correctly on the head. Once the model is complete it can be exported to a .fbx format and either placed straight into engine or rigged and animated with mixamo.
